Dalaguete as Featured in Biyahe ni Drew on April 19, 2013

DALAGUETE, a town of the province of Cebu, island of Cebu, Philippine Islands, at the mouth of the TapOn river on the E. coast, 50 m. S.S.W. of Cebu, the capital. The town has a healthy climate, cool during November, December, January and February, and hot during the rest of the year. The inhabitants grow hemp, Indian corn, coffee, sibucao, cacao, cocoanuts (for copra) and sugar, weave rough fabrics and manufacture tuba (a kind of wine used as a stimulant), clay pots and jars, salt and soap. There is some fishing here. The language is Ceb6-Visayan.

The foundation of Dalaguete began when it was established as a visita of Carcar in 1690. In 1711, it became a parish under the patronage of San Guillermo de Aquitaña.

In the 1800s, the church complex served as fortification protecting the townspeople from the frequent Moro attacks.

The current church was a product of the baroque taste of Fray Juan Chacel, who built it in 1802. The rectory on the right side was completed in 1832 while the octagonal belfry was added in the late 1850s.

The walls enclosing the church plaza consisted of thick low barriers made of coral stones with square pillars topped with pointed finials.

The same landmark was originally dedicated to Andres Bonifacio. So why did the image of the Great Plebian remove from the pedestal?

It was believed that the statue of Bonifacio wielding his bolo has inspired the people to become aggressive and violent that town authorities decided to replace the monument with an image of the Great Malayan to remind the people of unity and peace.

OBONG SPRING

Picture
The coolest spring in dalaguete is located at Balud, Dalaguete, Cebu.

The Obong Spring is a fresh water spring which emanates near the beach. Because of steady outpour of water, a pool of freshwater meets the sea especially when the tide is high and the water become brackish. So, that’s the explanation behind such mystery.

MANTALONGON

Picture
Mantalongon is not called "Summer Capital" and "Little Baguio of Cebu" for nothing. Mantalongon, a hinterland barangay some 14 kilometers up the scenic mountains, is popular with its cool climate even during summer. In fact, it is the most popular of all barangays in Dalaguete. The name itself is already synonymous with high value crops especially vegetables and flowers. With its pleasant climate all year round, many city folks and other out-of-towners come in droves during summer to escape the sweltering heat in the lowlands.

OSMENA PEAK

Picture
*****************************************************************************************************

Osmena Peak is known to be the highest peak in the province and island of Cebu. Base on actual GPS altitude, it stand approximately 1000 meters above sea level. Osmena peak is located in the vicinity area of Mantalongon, (a town that is around 700 to 800 meters and probably one of the highest towns in Cebu. Mantalongon has been known as the vegetable kingdom of Cebu. Its really unusual finding this town where you feel it was like an area in the Cordilleras were they have their trading post for vegetable dealers and townfolks and children are wearing jackets at high noon. Reminds me of Baguio City and La Trinidad).

UTANON FESTIVAL

UTANON FESTIVAL IS A CELEBRATION OF GOOD HARVEST THROUGH DANCE AND MUSIC. THROUGH MUSIC BECAUSE DALAGUETE IS NOT ONLY THE VEGETABLE BASKET OF THE PROVINCE OF CEBU BUT ALSO THE MUSIC CAPITAL OF THE ISLAND AS WELL.
Picture
Utanon Festival is a festival of music and dance featuring our high value crops and vegetables as a major form of trade, its contribution to the local economy, its role in cultural diversity and its significance as an industry representative of Dalaguetnons as a people. The festival shall focus on the concept of the people’s cultural practices of religious worship as thanksgiving for a bountiful harvest. It shall become a marketing tool for the promotion of our vegetable industry and gives emphasis that vegetable farming is a sustainable source of livelihood. These economic components shall be coupled with our reputation as a town of music and world class musicians featuring our cultural heritage.  This will be held during the Annual celebration of our Patron Saint San Guillermo de Aquitania on February.

The event will showcase a parade and a competition of the different groups of contingents, musicians, floats, higantes and bands in Dalaguete and will be "spiced up" by groups of dancers who will be dancing with newly developed street dancing steps specifically designed for our festival.

Participating groups are our local contingents composed of elementary and high school students. They will be packaged by using uniforms or costumes with specific themes which are of Cebuano or Visayan traditional influence: e.g. Spanish period, American, colonial, etc.
